Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Evaluation - Question 6

"What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?"

The first thing I learnt was how to blog using http://www.blogger.com/, which I believe is a much better way of displaying portfolio than folders/files or Powerpoints as it is quicker, easier to display things such as photos and videos and it is easy to link to other websites in order to explain fully what you mean.

I have a list of hardware and software we used which I will refer back to in this post (see pre-evaluation summary).

Things I learnt whilst shooting:

  • I learnt how to use our Canon mini-DV HD cameras and its basic features such as setting it up with battery and tape, the zoom button and recording (we did not use HD tapes because they are expensive and would slow down our school computers, which have not yet been updated with correct HD settings). We learnt how to run the camera on batteries, not mains, so it was versatile with the tripod and we could shoot handheld shots.
  • I learnt how to play the roles of director, assistant director and sound director. As director we were told to ask, "Sound? Camera rolling... and, action!" and we were taught to run the camera for a couple of seconds either side of the action to make it easy to edit and not miss any action. Assistant director held up the clipboard with scene number and take number and sound director got to wear the headphones to hear what the on-board mics were recording. It was all very efficient.
  • I learnt how to use studio lights (we used three) with barn doors to gain lighting in all different kinds of angles. We also used blue gel clipped to the front of the lights for our blue effect and a white throw in the background to cover much of the clutter in the scene. We learnt that the lights were very versatile and great to gain extreme varities in light intensity and in colour using different coloured gels. However, they were a hassle to keep having to set up and pack away, and it took them a long time to cool down after using them for a few minutes - this led to an accident on shoot (a burn and smashed light filter). They have to be handled very carefully and the group must take full responcibility in looking after them and themselves.

Things I learnt whilst editing:
  • I learnt the basic processes of using Adobe Premiere Pro to edit, which included non-linear editing. It gave use the chance to switch between different sequences and timelines. We had a practise timeline in which we pieced together random strings of shots that we thought might look good in our actual sequence. The ones we liked we copied and pasted into our real timeline. We also used another sequence to cut together some outtakes. It was very easy to do all these things in one project and mistakes were easily undone, so there was no pressure - we could relax whilst experimenting.
  • I learnt some new processes I had not come across before in this particular editing software (which we have used for a previous project). I learnt how to layer shots, vary speed and duration of shots, vary volume and sound levels using markers, ghosting using the cross-dissolve transition, transferring files between PC and Mac, and frame by frame editing in Paintshop Pro (to eradicate a schoolbag in the background of a scene). I was used to these processes by the end of the project and from now on I am probably ready to move on to more advanced settings.
  • I learnt how to use Adobe After Effects (another part of the Adobe creative suites - CS's) to make our titles special. This was done by editing each individual letter for our title seperately and putting a glowing/fade in effect on it, whilst also setting markers on transparency to make them flicker. We put an order to when each letter faded in and put them all together as one animation in which random letters came in at different times to spell 'Reservation'. From now on I will probably use the programme to create titles. Other programmes I briefly used were Livetype and Handbrake on iMac, Livetype had built in animations that we never used because they were not what we were looking for, and Handbrake we used to enhance our scream sound at the end by mixing it with a sound ripped from a DVD, which did work in the end. It was Jack who used this programme more so I did not learnt how to use it properly.

At the end of the project we discussed ways we think we could improve the teaching in the media department to teach students even more about technologies they could be using for years to come:
  • We agreed more should be taught about using the manual settings on the Canon video cameras as we had a problem with blur during inconsistent lighting (our flickering lights kept making the lense re-focus and therefore blur for a couple of seconds). My brother informed me there was a way of adjusting the lense settings so that the focus did not automatically adjust to changes in lighting, and therefore would not move in and out of focus on flickering lights - we did not know how to do this and still don't, but the method is supposed to be simple so could be something we learn early on this course.
  • We thought there could be more lessons on using the lighting equipment as only two groups (including ours) got to use the studio lights and we had to be assisted alot by the media technition in handling them. We thought more could be made use of out of the focus settings on the lights for more filmic effects and to adapt to different surroundings. In the end this was not a problem as our lighting was OK, but it is something we thought we might need to know on future shoots.
Overall, the technology we used was very good for a school media department and for an AS course. The technology all worked very quickly and nothing was ever too complicated (technological issues were always eventually resolved). I learnt alot of things about using hardware on shoot and software in the edit suite. There are a couple of things I would do differently on hindsight, one being that I would try and challenge myself more on shoot to try out things such as a man-made amateur dolly (a skateboard perhaps) to fix our tripod/camera on and try hard advanced techniques such as a 'Hithcock' contra-zoom or a 360 arc of a subject. The other thing I would do differently would be to research more into the manual settings of the camera, and focus settings of the lights (see improvements to course above). However, with the technolgy and support we recieved, I think we did a brilliant job, and I am alot more prepared for all sorts of new meda technologies in the future.

An Update On Things

It is Friday 9th January and I am at home after a long week back at school. Our production deadline is the coming Wednesday luncthime (14th January). However, our group can render this irrelevant as we have officially finished our final edited sequence, hooray!

Basically, this week has been a mad rush of editing, gaining feedback, making changes based on this feedback, getting more feedback, making more changes etc etc. Today we had one test screen in front of some media students giving us even more critical feedback to work on during the second half of the school day before having one last test screen in front of a slightly different audience of media students after school. This gave us one or two more minor changes to make, which we applied to the sequence. We eventually got confirmation of completion from Miss Blackborow at about 17:05 (a long time after school!) giving us the finished sequence. This is soon to be put on DVD and on Youtube for us all to see and enjoy.

All this editing probably explains why I have not done a blog post since the one telling everyone we were back at school after christmas, and while this has only been a week, i still feel it necessary to explain myself: we have been very busy on the editing software leaving us with hardly any time on our hands to blog (and even this little time was devoted to the group blog and not the individual).

So yeah, that leaves me to tell you that details on all the editing and how we have fixed our sequence up this past week (especially today) can be found on our group blog.

Now we have no more editing to do, we can make a start on the final chapter of this project, and that is the evaluation. I will be back sometime next week to update on how this is going as I will be drafting it first before it makes its grand appearance on the blog. I have rambled on long enough now, bye!

Welcome Back!

We are now back and running for the new year!

Jack and I have recovered from winter illnesses but Shaun has sadly not... but he is still with us editing away this week, in what has been a very successful week so far. We feel we are making great progress with our edited sequence which is near completion. We recieved great feedback from Miss Blackborow and have decided against a re-shoot due to an unavailable actor and the fact we have basically sorted out all the problems we were re-shooting because of in the first place. It is all down to fantastic editing by the team. Good times!

Merry Christmas

We have 2 weeks off for christmas now. We are pretty much up to date project-wise, and editing is going well. We have a finished sequence using old footage with only a few minor touches to be applied. We plan to shoot the first Tuesday back and maybe replace some of the shots with near-perfect ones, but all the editing is in place so this will not take long to fix up.

My Editing Schedule

Our group was given an edit suite to share with one other group, consisting of one computer with editing software and one normal computer to blog with. Our teacher devised an editing schedule for each group member for the last 2 weeks before christmas. These individual editing slots were in our free periods at school, as more editing time other than just the lessons.

This is my individual editing schedule for the weeks beginning 8th and 15th December, showing my individual editing time input for my group (Periods are 40 minutes long):

Our third and final editing week begins on Monday 5th January after our christmas holidays. This week will be more intense for editing, with our editing schedules taking up half our free periods, 2 lunchtimes and 2 after school sessions each.

Sounds

I managed to find some realistic free soundclips from http://www.soundsnap.com/, this being my job for an editing session.

I got a light buzzing sound for our first clip, a faint dripping water sound that can be turned up on the dripping water clip, a man screaming in pain for when Matt walks past a new victim and a general scary background sound full of bangs and echoes. The light buzzing sound proved unsucessful as it was unrealistic, so we will just use a buzz sound from one of the test shots of the lights. The dripping water sound worked after turning it up to absolute maximum volume. The male scream we tried to use on the slamming of the door but it didn't sound right, almost too comical, whilst the banging sounds sounded like patting water so we decided against using these 2 sounds in our final sequence.

Credits

In an editing session on my own I decided I did not like the content of the credits that appeared and felt these could be made better or more film-like.

Originally it started with 'directed by...' then 'edited by...' then 'produced by', whereas it is more conventional to begin along the lines of 'a film by...' then 'produced by...' then 'directed by...'. 'Edited by...' is not usually used in an opening sequence.

Also, the original credits had our 3 full names but this seemed a bit too straight forward.

I noticed alot of films had a film company and a production company to fill the first 2 credits so I made 2 up. I came up with the film company name 'Live Wire' to match the opening credit shot of the light turning on. "A film by Live Wire" sounded like a decent opening, not taking too much away from the atmosphere but adding to the anchorage.

After this I felt it was important to include all our names in opening credits still, but not in such a straight forward way, so for the production company I created the false partnership of 'Wall & Bayliss' (the second names of me and Shaun respectively), based in a group in-joke with both mine and Shaun's older brothers having worked on the same media project 3 years ago. I decided the phrase, "A Wall & Bayliss Production" worked well following on from the first credit, appearing around some cracks in a wall in a disjointed way.

This left one credit left, and having not included Jack yet and him having probably done most of the actual camerawork on shoots, we went for a simple "directed by Jack Downes" to appear alongside the dripping water on the third credit scene.

After this the film starts with a montage of clips showing the character waking up in the chair, and we felt this a mysterious and suitable time to introduce the 2 actor names in a faded kind of style one after the other in opposite corners of the screen in which the victims head dominates. These actor names were "Robert Demont" and "Matthew Doyle". The unclarity of which of the actors is shown at this point, and the fact there is only one character when 2 actor names are shown add to the mystery and enigma of the scene.

The 2 minute sequence then follows ending on either an image of the door with the hand, or simply fading to black, both of which will reveal the title of the film. We are still yet to decide on this title, which is the final thing I have to do in this blog post.
